How Much Storage Do You Need for GTA 6 on PS5?

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Digital buyers can preload from November 12. The question everyone asks is how much space to free up, and the honest answer is that Rockstar has not published an official install size yet.

This guide shows what your PS5 can actually hold, how to reason about the unknown, and what to do now.

How much usable storage your PS5 has

The number on the box is not the number you can use. The system software takes a share, so the usable space is lower. These are the usable figures for each model:

That is the space for all your games, captures and apps together. What matters for GTA 6 is how much of it is still free.

Why we are not giving you a number

You will see viral figures for the GTA 6 file size. Ignore them. None come from Rockstar, and a wrong number leads to bad decisions, such as deleting games you did not need to delete or buying storage you did not need.

A practical way to plan

You do not need the exact figure to prepare. You need a comfortable margin.

2. Compare with big games you already own. Look at how much space GTA V Enhanced and Red Dead Redemption 2 take on your console, if you have them. Those are the closest real references for a large Rockstar game. GTA 6 is a new, large open-world game, so treat them as a starting point, not a prediction.
3. Plan for more than you think. If your free space is close to the size of those games, you are probably short. Aim to have clearly more free space than the biggest game you can see installed.
4. Leave room for updates. Large games often receive patches after release. Rockstar has not said what a day-one update may weigh, so do not plan to the last gigabyte.

What to do before the preload

You have until November 12, and there is a lot you can do at no cost.

• Move or remove captures. Screenshots and video clips add up. Copy what you want to keep to a USB drive or the cloud, then delete the originals.

Can you add more storage to a PS5?

Yes. PS5 consoles support an internal expansion slot for a compatible M.2 SSD, and you can also use external drives for some purposes.
