Xbox Download Slow or Stuck? Fixes for Series X and S

Xbox downloads can slow down or stall for reasons that have little to do with the console. With the GTA 6 preload opening on November 12, 2026 for digital buyers and launch on November 19, it is worth fixing your connection early. Rockstar has not published an official install size, so plan for a large download.

This guide follows the order that Microsoft's support pages suggest. Try the fixes in turn and re-test after each one.

Step 1: Measure your real speed

You need a number before you change anything.

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Go to Profile & system, then Settings, then General, then Network settings.
  3. Select Test network speed & statistics.

Compare the result with the speed in your internet plan. The detailed statistics can show problems such as lost data packets. Run the test more than once, and at different times of day. For more on reading the results, see how to test your internet speed on PS5 and Xbox.

If the console reports far less than your plan, keep going. If it matches your plan, the download is simply limited by your plan, and our download time guide shows what to expect.

Step 2: Use a wired connection

Microsoft's guidance starts with this. If the console connects over Wi-Fi, it may be sharing the airwaves with other devices and other networks. Plug an Ethernet cable from the router to the console and test again. This is often the biggest single improvement. For the full comparison, read Wi-Fi or Ethernet for PS5 and Xbox.

Step 3: If you must use Wi-Fi, improve it

  • Check whether your router is dual-band. If it offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Microsoft suggests putting the console on 5 GHz and other wireless devices on 2.4 GHz. The 5 GHz band has a shorter range but often has less interference.
  • Move the console closer to the router, or move the router closer to the console.

Step 4: Pause other activity on your network

Other devices compete for the same bandwidth. Pause downloads and streaming on phones, TVs and computers and see whether the console speeds up. If your router supports Quality of Service (QoS), turning it on and giving the console priority can help. Settings differ by router, so follow your router maker's guide.

Step 5: Avoid other activity on the console

A game running in the background can slow a download. Microsoft also mentions that a Remote Play session can slow it. If you want the fastest result, let the download run while you do nothing else on the console.

Step 6: Try an off-peak time

If your speeds drop on evenings and weekends, your provider may be busy at peak times. Microsoft suggests starting large downloads late in the evening so they can finish overnight.

Step 7: Manage your queue and data cap

The console installs queued items one at a time, so the order in which you add them matters. If your plan has a monthly data cap, you can turn off automatic game updates in Settings, then System, then Updates, and choose which updates to install. That keeps small updates from using data you want for the big download.

Step 8: Check Xbox service status

If everything on your side looks fine, check the Xbox status page for outages that affect games and apps. If there is one, wait for it to clear.

Is it your plan?

If a wired connection gives you far less than your plan, the cause is probably your router, your modem or your provider. Contact your provider and tell them the numbers from the speed test.

What counts as slow?

Slow is relative to your plan. If you pay for a fast connection and the console reports a small fraction of it, something is limiting it. If the console reports close to your plan speed, the download is running as fast as your plan allows, and the only way to speed it up is a faster plan. The speed test is how you tell the two apart, so always run it first.

A quick checklist

  • Run the speed test, and run it again at a different time.
  • Connect a cable, or use the 5 GHz band.
  • Pause other devices and avoid other activity on the console.
  • Try late evening for large downloads.
  • Check the Xbox status page.

Prepare before November 12

The short version

  • Test your speed, then try a wired connection.
  • On Wi-Fi, use the 5 GHz band and get closer to the router.
  • Pause other devices, avoid other activity on the console, and try off-peak hours.
  • If a wired connection is still slow, talk to your provider.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Xbox download so slow?

Common causes are weak Wi-Fi, other devices using the same bandwidth, busy times on your provider's network, and activity on the console itself. A speed test tells you whether the problem is your connection or something else.

Is Ethernet better than Wi-Fi on Xbox?

Microsoft's support guidance puts a wired connection first when downloads are slow.

Can I limit downloads if I have a data cap?

Yes. You can turn off automatic game updates and choose which updates to install.

Do these steps work on Series S and Series X?

Yes. Microsoft's guidance is written for Xbox consoles in general, and the steps apply to both.
