GTA 6 File Size on Xbox Series S: Is the 512GB Model Enough?
The Xbox Series S 512GB model is the console most likely to run out of space. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, with preload from November 12 for digital buyers, and Rockstar has not published an official install size yet.
So is 512GB enough? We cannot answer with a number. We can show you how to decide.
What you really have
The 512GB model does not give you 512 GB. The system keeps part of it, and the usable space is 364 GB.
| Console | Usable storage |
|---|---|
| Xbox Series S (512GB model) | 364 GB |
| Xbox Series X | 802 GB |
For comparison, PS5 consoles have 667 GB (original), about 842 GB (Slim) and about 1.89 TB (Pro). The Series S has the least room of any of them.
Why a big game is a problem on 364 GB
A single large game can take a big share of 364 GB. Add a few other modern games, and the console is full. If the GTA 6 install turns out to be large, you will probably need to uninstall other games to fit it. If it is very large, you may be able to keep little else installed.
We will not guess a number. Instead, look at what a big Rockstar game already costs on your console. If you have Red Dead Redemption 2 or GTA V Enhanced installed, check their size. They are the closest real references, but GTA 6 is a new game and could differ. Plan for more than you think.
Check where you stand
- Open your storage screen and note your free space. Our guide on how to check free storage on any PS5 or Xbox shows how.
- List the games you play weekly. Everything else is a candidate to uninstall.
- Decide how many other games you want installed next to GTA 6.
Your options if space is tight
Free space. Uninstalling games you no longer play is free, and you can download them again later. Follow our guide to free up storage on Xbox Series X|S before GTA 6.
Add storage. Xbox Series X|S consoles support a dedicated storage expansion card that plugs into the back of the console. The expansion card is built for the Series X|S, and it can run Series X|S games. A regular external USB hard drive has different limits, so check what it can run before you buy. See our guide on external drives for PS5 and Xbox.
If you buy, see an Xbox storage expansion card and check it matches your console. We may earn a commission; read our affiliate disclosure.
Wait for the number. If you can, wait for the official size. You will know exactly how much to free and whether you need to buy anything.
What to do before November 12
