PS5 'Not Enough Free Space' Error: What It Means and How to Fix It

You start a download and the PS5 tells you there is not enough free space. The message is clear, but it does not tell you how much room you really need. This guide explains what the error means and how to get past it.

It is also useful before the GTA 6 preload on November 12, 2026. Rockstar has not published an official install size, so you cannot know your target yet. What you can do is learn how to make room fast.

What the error means

Sony lists two error codes for this problem:

  • CE-107872-5: there is not enough free space on the console storage.
  • CE-100028-1: there is not enough free space on the SSD.

In both cases, the console has less free room than the install needs. The codes are as reported on Sony's own error pages, so if your screen shows a different code, look it up on Sony's error code list.

Why you may need more room than the game size

This is the part that surprises people. Sony notes that when installing data, it may be necessary to reserve approximately twice the free space required. In other words, the free space you need at install time can be higher than the size of the finished game.

So leave a margin. If a game says it needs a certain amount, aim to have clearly more than that free before you start.

Step 1: Find out how much you need and how much you have

  1. In your Game Library, select the game, then More (the three dots), then View Product. The minimum free space appears on the right of the screen.
  2. Go to Settings, then Storage, and note your free space.

Our guide on how to check free storage on any PS5 or Xbox shows this in 30 seconds.

Step 2: Make room

Go to Settings, then Storage, then Console Storage, then Games and Apps. Choose the games you no longer play and select Delete. If a game shows Customize, you can delete only part of its data. Deleted games can be downloaded again from your game library later.

For a calm, ordered way to do this, follow how to clear space on PS5 before the GTA 6 preload.

Step 3: Try the download again

Return to the download. If the error was only about space, it should now start. If it stalls, work through the stuck download fixes.

If you still do not have enough room

You have three options:

  1. Delete more. Games you have finished are the best candidates.
  2. Add an internal M.2 SSD. Sony says PS5 games can be downloaded to it and played from it. It must be a compatible drive, and cooling is mandatory.
  3. Use extended storage for the games you are not playing. A USB drive can store PS5 games, but they must be copied back to the console to play, and PS5 games cannot be downloaded straight to it.

Our guide to external drives on PS5 and Xbox explains the difference, and how much storage you need for GTA 6 helps you plan.

How much room does your PS5 have in total?

PS5 modelUsable storage
PS5 (original)667 GB
PS5 Slimabout 842 GB
PS5 Proabout 1.89 TB

That is the most you can ever have free, and everything installed is subtracted from it.

The short version

  • The error means not enough free room. Installs can need more space than the finished game.
  • Check the game's minimum space, check your free space, then delete what you do not play.
  • Add an M.2 SSD if you need more playable space.
  • Rockstar has not published the GTA 6 size, so aim for more room than you think.
